Have you ever had a conversation with someone who wanted to talk about how hard things were for them at work, or life in general, every time you meet? And when you mentioned "well, have you thought about ….. or what else could you do?" and they looked at you like you were crazy? Let me introduce you to the "martyr" – the person who wants an audience to complain to – and there is nothing wrong with that initially – but who refuses to make changes that would make their life better? It is almost as if they believe there is power or honour in suffering? I sometimes work with people who become "former martyrs" – people who realise that their power is not in complaining about how much they have to do on a day to day basis – but in making the actual changes that will allow them to have less to complain about. What have you taken action on that used to be consistent complaint for you?
