It seems that as a career woman who is also a mother the recession could force you to choose which role to pursue. As companies are forced to cut back many expect longer hours from their employees and offer less flexibility for working mothers. Many SMEs are unable to be flexible enough to operate through a maternity leave and a new mother may find that their working conditions have been changed making it harder for them to get back into the role. It seems that female executives in the financial sector are suffering most with increasing the number of women board members being an unattractive proposition whilst fighting through a recession. On the plus side UK businesses are typically faster at adopting mobile working practices than other countries in Europe including France and Germany. Research by Citrix found that 35% of companies have adopted more mobile working schemes in the last five years. As many companies begin to realise the benefits of keeping and promoting their female talent, this could be the time to suggest a more flexible, mobile, working environment.
