While I coach many women who have them, I don’t have an MBA. In fact, while I’m pleased I have my PhD I know that in my line of work – it definitely is not a necessity. However, sometimes when speaking to audiences of professional women, I am often asked about the benefits of an MBA or even PhD for career success. Personally I’m almost always in favour of taking your education to the next level, but with one caveat….you understand that it will not automatically lead to “career nirvana”. I sometimes meet women who are not getting on as well as they’d like at work and wonder if a MBA would give them a leg up. It’s vital to look around…if the colleagues you admire and who are actually making traction in their career have these advanced degree, then you might benefit too. But if they are doing just fine without an advanced degree – don’t kid yourself into thinking it’s the missing ingredient for you…look instead to your profile and relationships. This article in Forbes “To MBA or Not to MBA?” does a good job of running through what the degree will give you …and what it most certainly won’t.
