The Stigma Around “Stay-At-Home” Dads

Today I was interviewed by Radio 4 Women’s Hour on the stigma around ‘stay-at-home dads’. A range of fathers who stayed at home were interviewed before I then explained how prevalent it was for men to want to be described, not in their family role as at-home father, but by any professional role they had – IT consultant, driving instructor, self-employed painter and decorator, even if the reality was that work brought in little or even no real money, and they spent most of their time keeping the house and family ticking over which is a real contribution by any standard! There is a definite stigma for men to announce they stay at home with children, but I think that is true for women too, who often feel they should be earning in some capacity as well as being a good mother, as “women can now have it all, right?” If there is an at-home dad in your life, listen to the segment on at-home dad’s on Radio 4 Women’s Hour.
