I am currently interviewing women for a book I am writing on women in male-dominated fields and I feel like someone should pinch me. I feel honoured to keep meeting the most interesting and inspiring women, from a variety of industries, from law to management consulting to neuroscience to I.T. Last week I met with Jane Lewis and Philippa Snare of Microsoft, who both inspired me with their take on what makes technology so exciting. They both felt that communication technologies, for example, merely enhance what we as a society have been doing for millennia – creating friends and making recommendations to them based on shared values. They pointed out that if the relationship aspect of modern technology was highlighted, the field would no longer struggle to find women. Later in the week, I then saw an article in The Independent that echoed these sentiments and asked how women could break the digital divide to take advantage of the wealth of opportunities in this field.
